Pedro Saint-Maurice
Champalimaud Foundation
Curriculum
Dr. Pedro Saint-Maurice is a well-recognised international leader in Epidemiology and currently leads the Physical Activity & Quality of Life Lab at the Champalimaud Foundation. His research focuses on understanding how physical activity and sleep impact cancer outcomes, with a particular emphasis on developing evidence-based exercise interventions to enhance treatment tolerance, improve survivorship, and enhance overall quality of life.
A central part of his work involves translating wearable-derived metrics—such as walking cadence and sleep patterns—into clinically meaningful tools for risk stratification and personalized oncology care.
Dr. Saint-Maurice has an outstanding track record in examining how physical activity affects chronic disease risk, especially cancer, and his research has contributed directly to shaping the current U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines for adults. Ongoing projects in his lab include a randomized trial investigating resistance exercise and breast tumor biomarkers, and a long-term study characterizing sleep during neoadjuvant chemotherapy using a contactless under-mattress sleep sensor.
